Meditation and Mindfulness in Trauma Therapy

Presenters: Trillion Small, MS & Christine Forner, MSW, RSW

In the first half of this webinar, Trillion Small, MS, LMFT-A, will speak about 'Spirituality in Trauma Therapy: Techniques and Strategies'. This part of the webinar will address how to use spirituality to engage your client’s heart, mind, and/or soul. You will walk away with an integrative understanding and approach on how to incorporate spirituality into your sessions with spiritual and non-spiritual clients. Trauma and spirituality will be integrated with various viewpoints such as neuroscience and attachment to help create a diverse repertoire of interventions for your targeted population.

In the second half of the webinar, Christine Forner , BA, MSW, Registered Social Worker, will talk about mindfulness and its relationship to dissociative processes. Her talk is titled, 'Meditation and Mindfulness in Trauma Therapy'. The traumatic dissociative process is the opposite of the mindfulness process; one is a brain process that increases awareness the other is a brain process that decreases awareness – they are rival brain activities, where dissociation wins every time. Dissociation is about not knowing the real danger and pain; it is also basically playing dead in the face of life threatening danger, in order to survive. Mindfulness is the highest form of self-knowledge, it is the capacity to know and have understanding of all of one’s self. From this perspective it makes sense that it is not good to be aware of things when you are a tiger’s mouth.  It also makes sense that a mind that is perpetually dissociating becomes phobic of mindfulness.

This interactive webinar will demonstrate and discuss what mindfulness is, the role mindfulness plays within interpersonal, secure attachment relationships and how mindfulness meditation practices interplay with the dissociative process. This workshop will also give a comprehensive summary of traumatic dissociation in order to understand the difficulty and possible injurious implications of mindfulness meditation within a dissociative clinical population. Suggestions, alternatives and creative meditations for dissociative disorders will be offered and demonstrated to assist clinicians to teach a dissociative mind to learn to slowly become a mindful, associated mind.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

    1. Understand the nature of spirituality and how it influences the client’s heart and mind and vice versa.

    2. Acquire various techniques & strategies that can be easily implemented in session with traumatized clients.

    3. Discuss the theory behind the rival brain activities of mindfulness and dissociation

    4. Learn alternatives to assist clients with Dissociative Disorders to become mindful, in order to foster growth and mental health
